You will join the Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) and Urgent Care Clinical Service Units (CSUs) at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) which together cover Acute Internal Medicine (AIM), General Internal Medicine (GIM), Elderly Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine. Although post-holders will undertake most of their clinical duties within their chosen parent specialty, they may be asked to contribute to the care of patients in all of these areas from time-to-time. Our department at SJUH is currently based across Chancellors Wing and Gledhow Wing. It comprises four Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a High Observation Unit (HOBS)), a Same Day Emergency Care service (with both a Medical Unit and Older Persons Unit), two General Medicine / Diabetes & Endocrinology wards, five Elderly Medicine wards, and an Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine Unit.

Excellent experience will be provided in ambulatory care, the management of acutely ill patients, on-going in-patient care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning. Furthermore, we have very good links with Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, especially with the Community Care Beds, and run a large number of specialist out-patient clinics. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Completion of Foundation Year 2 competencies or equivalent. We would welcome applications from doctors with a greater level of experience.

At least 6-months experience within the NHS in Acute, General or Elderly Medicine, or Infectious Diseases. Please see Person Specification for further details DUTIES OF THE POST To ensure high quality and safe care of patients within the department resulting in excellent clinical outcomes. To contribute directly to patient care by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress. To undertake essential administrative duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and liaising with colleagues in primary care.

To contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied healthcare professionals, including the Early Discharge Assessment Team, specialist nurses and physiotherapists. You will be provided with ring-fenced time to pursue a specialist interest in medical management, quality improvement, teaching and education, or simulation. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The postholder will be expected to work at the level of a post-Foundation Year 2 trainee doctor (ST1 to ST2 equivalent). They will have access to supervision and support from a Registrar and Consultant at all times.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING Protected non-clinical time will be provided. There will be opportunity for undergraduate teaching. Study leave is available, at the discretion of Educational Supervisors, for courses/training related to Acute, General and Elderly Medicine, or Infectious.
