Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an Estimator/Bid Lead to join our Balvac team working on projects across the UK
For over 90 years our Balvac business has been delivering innovative structural repair, strengthening, protection and maintenance solutions to sustainably extend the life of our nation's infrastructure.
Our clients include some of the major local authorities across the UK. These services have also been successfully transferred into various other key sectors including rail, marine, coastal, power, industrial and commercial sectors.
With an ever-increasing portfolio and a major expansion planned, we are looking to identify several talented individuals (Contracts Engineers, Site Agents, Project Managers & Specialist Services Engineers) based across the country to join this high-octane energy driven team.

What you'll be doing
As An Estimator/Bid Lead, You Will Be Expected To Work Closely With The Pre-construction Manager, Commercial, Operational, Engineering And Technical Teams To
- Review enquiries and associated documents such as Scoping brief; contract terms and conditions; technical reports; specifications; drawings; health, safety, quality, and sustainability documents
- Prepare and deliver internal presentations for briefing others
- Undertake the necessary governance associated with Pre-construction (bid/ no bid decisions)
- Develop a Pre-construction strategy to deliver the Client’s anticipated deliverables within the necessary timescales
- Plan the project and prepare the pre-construction and delivery stage programmes. Organise and undertake site visits as appropriate.
As the Bid Lead, you will be responsible for developing your skills to a point where you can take ultimate responsibility, ownership and accountability of the below tasks:
- Determine scope from tender documents
- Undertake take-offs from drawings
- Prepare an estimate for the project and any associated pricing documents (e.g. bill of quantities, activity schedule)
- Identify, eliminate and mitigate risk. Document risk on a risk register
- Produce and manage subcontract enquiries
- Prepare offer letters for submission including methodology summaries
- Compare received order against submission.
You Will Have The Following
- Must be a self-motivated and disciplined individual
- Capable of working remotely but collaboratively within a high performing team
- Excellent numeracy and writing skills
- Good and confident communicator. Liaison required at all levels, internally and externally
- Understand the value of team-working and be prepared to assist others to meet their own commitments and deadlines
- Have a sufficient understanding of the New Engineering Contract (NEC)
- An understanding of standards, specifications, construction techniques and methodologies in the specialist markets (structural repair and maintenance) would be an advantage.
