About You

As a Zoo Maintenance Supervisor, you will bring to the role:

About The Role

This is a key role at Lotherton Wildlife Worldhelping to ensure our site remains safe, functional and fit for purpose across a wide variety of animal enclosures, public areas and behind-the-scenes spaces.

As our new Zoo Maintenance Supervisor, you take the lead on day-to-day site upkeep, from general repairs and landscaping to machinery maintenance, pest control, and working alongside contractors. You coordinate planned maintenance with the Zoo Manager and animal team, helping to ensure minimal disruption to animal care and visitor experience.

You also support staff, volunteers, and work placements, while playing a vital role in shaping the site ongoing improvements and developments. This is a hands-on, outdoor role that offers variety, autonomy, and the chance to make a visible impact every day in one of Leedsmost unique locations.

Job Description

Job purpose

To undertake and supervise horticultural and maintenance duties, within Lotherton Wildlife World, under the direction and working with the Zoo Manager and animal team.

Responsibilities


  • The undertaking and supervision of all horticultural & maintenance operations within all Wildlife World.
  • The supervision and training of staff, including seasonal staff, trainees, volunteers and work placements.
  • To be responsible for all maintenance and horticultural scheduling and service records for all site-based plant and machinery.
  • To develop and maintain a proactive approach to pest control and to manage the control of pest in all areas of the zoo working in collaboration with the pest control officer.
  • To be first contact for all contractors on site ensuring safe working practices are understood and maintained at all times.
  • To suggest and help plan improvements required in the facilities at Wildlife World including proactive maintenance, repairs and exterior landscaping.
  • To lead on general housekeeping of the site to include, but not exclusive to, litter picking & emptying of bins to a fixed schedule.
  • To maintain effective working relationships with other site-based supervisors at Lotherton and to work in a collaborative manner to ensure efficiencies are achieved where possible.
  • To organise and schedule planned maintenance and work with the zoo manager and animal team to arrange site contingencies around planned works.
  • To compile accurate records as required by all applicable legislation.
  • To ensure that Climate Energy & Greenspaces Safety Policy and relevant Safe Working Practices are adhered to by the staff under the post holder control.
  • To undertake any training as is deemed necessary to improve performance and to meet the needs of the maintenance of the parks and surrounding areas.

Qualifications

Candidates who can demonstrate a significant period of work experience, but who do not have a formal qualification, will be considered for the post.

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.


  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of people individually, in groups and at all appropriate levels and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to undertake physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
  • Capable of carrying out minor repairs and alterations to enclosures, under the guidance of the Zoo Manager.
  • Experience in completing health and safety checks and compiling accurate records.
