About You

As a Child Protection and Training Officer (Education Safeguarding), you will bring to the role:


  • professional experience related to working with vulnerable children and their families and experience of operational safeguarding practice
  • an ability to provide professional advice, training and support to Education and Early Years staff.
  • A sound understanding of safeguarding/child protection legislation and of safeguarding issues within schools and early years settings.
  • The ability to developing effective inter-agency and multi-disciplinary approaches to issues.

Our Child Protection and Training Officers provide safeguarding training and support for schools and services in order that they are enabled to :


  • raise awareness and understanding of child protection issues in relation to their roles and responsibilities both in terms of Local authority procedures and the important preventative role they undertake.
  • ensure that their safeguarding arrangements are secure and in keeping with national guidance/legislation and local LSCP protocols.

Job Description

Job Purpose: To provide safeguarding training and support for schools and services in order that they are enabled to :


  • raise awareness and understanding of child protection issues in relation to their roles and responsibilities both in terms of Local authority procedures and the important preventative role they undertake.
  • To support schools to ensure that their safeguarding arrangements are secure and in keeping with national guidance/legislation and local LSCP protocols.


Responsibilities for Grade: The post holder is specifically responsible for;

Ensuring a response to requests for:


  • Training - the postholder will identify training needs and deliver professional training on all aspects of safeguarding. The training will be delivered to schools and to other services and agencies.
  • The delivery of a quality advice and support service to schools and services.
  • The post holder will undertake safeguarding audits and support schools with risk assessments for children and young people who commit harmful sexual behavior as required.


Contributing their expertise to


  • Curriculum development and support, advising schools on how to develop their curriculum; advising head teachers or colleagues in Education Services.
  • Representing Children Services and the Education Safeguarding team at interagency meetings.Act as a broker for schools and action any issues within Education Services. To assist schools in the development of any safeguarding plans required.
  • Planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluating child protection processes and training within schools and services.
  • The development, production and delivery of training materials
  • Developing and disseminating good practice in safeguarding work which promotes a co-ordinated interagency approach to supporting schools, individual pupils and families


Qualifications And Experience

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: It is essential that the Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post within the context of the specific role duties and responsibilities: Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements.

Method of Assessment will be through one or more of the following: Application Form, Test, Interview or Certificate.


  • The post holder must have experience related to working with vulnerable children and their families, substantial experience of operational safeguarding practice and experience of inter-agency and multi-disciplinary working
  • The post holder must demonstrate a comprhensive understanding of safeguarding/child protection legislation, KCSIE and of safeguarding issues within schools and early years settings.


Skills Required:

The post holder should be able to demonstrate the following skills:


  • Good inter-personal and communication skills, including delivery of written and verbal reports and presentations
  • Be competent in advising sensitively on appropriate responses and services to children and families
  • Planning and delivery of training to schools and other professionals
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to use information technology to enhance data and improve communications
  • Ability to work in partnership with other agencies to maximise positive outcomes for individual pupils


Knowledge Required The post holder will be expected to have knowledge and understanding of the following:


  • local and national safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • national PSHCE curriculum in relation to child protection work in schools
  • current issues in research and legislation regarding child protection/ safeguarding.
  • child protection roles and responsibilities of schools, Education and other interagency partners in the child protection process
  • positive ways of working to promote the prevention of abuse and the protection and support of children who may have experienced abuse
  • wider social factors that can contribute to child abuse
  • equal opportunities policies both national and local


Experience Required The postholder should be able to demonstrate the following experience;


  • professional training and development processes
  • Direct experience of safeguarding children and young people in educational settings
  • Multi agency working to support children and families
  • Developing plans, services, and/or other initiatives to meet identified needs
  • Successful organization of working groups through to completion of tasks
  • Promoting positive team working
  • Comprehensive record keeping and presentation of reports to different audiences
  • Creative problem solving
  • Disseminating good practice
  • Operational experience of the role of a designated safeguarding lead
