Salary: circa £54,000
Location: Leeds or Birmingham office
WFH policy: At least two days a week in the office (and or on site), and you’re welcome to come in more often
Flexible working: Variety of flexible work patterns subject to line manager discretion e.g. Compressed 9-day fortnight.

The AI/ML Engineer will play a key role in developing secure, scalable, and impactful AI and machine learning solutions across LCCC. This includes building and improving generative bespoke AI tools, and delivering applied ML use cases that enhance our operations.
Working closely with analysts, developers, and technical leads, the AI/ML Engineer will take functional ownership of AI/ML engineering, ensuring solutions are aligned with best practices in software design, security, and maintainability. The role will also contribute to setting foundational MLOps and engineering standards that enable responsible, future-proof AI adoption across the organisation.
The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience in Python development, applied machine learning, and modern software engineering. They will be naturally curious and self-directed, with the ability to move between exploration and production delivery. A strong advocate for AI and data best practices, they will promote responsible use of emerging technologies and contribute to building digital confidence and security awareness across teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and deploy secure and scalable AI and ML solutions, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and standards.
- Improve and maintain existing tools and models; enhancing accuracy, data ingestion, and user experience.
- Responsible for contributing to the development of reusable frameworks, engineering standards, and documentation that guide sustainable AI development.
- Work collaboratively with analysts, subject matter experts, and stakeholders to translate business needs into technically sound solutions
- Acts as a key technical partner to analysts and business teams, supporting knowledge transfer and model interpretability.
- Create and maintain clear, high-quality technical documentation and user-facing material.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise:
- A good first degree or higher in a highly numerate subject (e.g. computer science, engineering, mathematics, or data science).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in Python development, including use of scientific and data libraries such as NumPy, pandas, SciPy, or PySpark.
- Experience working with machine learning frameworks and libraries such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar.
- Strong grasp of object-oriented software engineering principles, with a focus on maintainability and scalability.
- Experience with version control tools, particularly Git, in collaborative development environments.
- Understanding of core data structures, algorithms, and model performance trade-offs.
- Familiarity with modern MLOps and model lifecycle practices, including reproducibility, testing, and deployment.
- Knowledge of responsible AI practices, data governance, and ethical implications of ML development.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences clearly and effectively.
- An adaptable and curious mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and learning.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP is desirable.
