Salary: SO2/PO1 *GBP*36,124 - *GBP*39,513 (pro rata); equates to *GBP*23.17 - *GBP*25.17 contact hourly rate

Hours: 6 posts, each approx. 3.5 - 4hrs p/w; all hours in these roles are on Saturday mornings

Location: Horsforth Music Centre - 1 post; Woodwind

North Leeds Music Centre - 1 post; Drums

South Leeds Music Centre - 4 posts; Woodwind, Drums, Keyboard and Keyboard/music with young children

About You

As a Music Centre Instructor you will bring to the role:


  • A high level of ability in the instrument being taught and a knowledge of teaching that instrument family
  • A broad knowledge of the teaching and learning of music and current instrumental teaching trends
  • Understanding of a wide range of musical styles and appropriate repertoire for the specific instrument family

About The Role

As a Music Centre Instructor you use your own skills and experience to inspire and develop your pupils, helping them to progress with their own chosen instrument as well as developing their wider musical understanding. You will also make them aware of and encourage engagement with wider playing opportunities such as centre based ensembles or, where appropriate, City of Leeds Youth Music groups.

The role is integral to our Music Centre team, which, through our 5 music centres, brings our offer of high quality music tuition into local community locations around Leeds

Job Description

Job purpose: as part of the ArtForms Music Team, to provide quality musical education to children and adults (from pre-school through to retirement) in the Leeds metropolitan area

Responsibilities:


  • Teach individual or group lessons in a music centre setting in line with ArtForms' shared and agreed practices
  • Be responsible for the musical progress of children, young people and adult learners in assigned classes and groups.
  • Deliver the agreed number of hours' teaching in the music centre for 27 weeks of the year.
  • Plan and evaluate with regard for the needs of all students within the class, differentiating work as appropriate
  • Develop resources for teaching and learning as appropriate
  • To assist with enrolment and placing students in appropriate classes
  • Promote the well-being of individual students and the groups assigned to them
  • Take part in concerts and performances in music centre where appropriate
  • Keep students and parents informed of other opportunities provided by ArtForms and its partners
  • Understand and implement LCC and ArtFormssafeguarding policies and procedures
  • Follow LCC and ArtFormsinclusion policies, actively promoting inclusion and equality for all
  • Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and development programmes.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training events as requested.
  • To maintain personal and professional development through CPD and other appropriate activities to meet the developing demands of the post
  • Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g., child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure equality for all working in an anti-discriminatory manner, upholding and promoting the values, standards and equal opportunities of Leeds City Council.

Qualifications It is essential that the postholder has the following - Qualification to Grade 8 on at least one instrument (including voice, where applicable), or equivalent standard. A Graduate, professional qualification or equivalent or Qualified teacher status would also be welcome

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.


  • A high level of ability in the instrument being taught and a knowledge of teaching that instrument family
  • Ability to teach all levels from beginners upwards
  • Ability to motivate learners of all abilities
  • Ability and experience of teaching groups and individuals
  • Ability to adapt easily to a variety of working practices and teaching environments
  • Knowledge of a wide range of musical styles and appropriate repertoire for the specific instrument family
  • Broader knowledge of the teaching and learning of music and current instrumental teaching trends

Desirable requirements It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates are not required to meet all the desirable requirements however these may be used to distinguish between candidates.


  • Ability to promote music education and to advocate for quality music teaching in music centres
  • Understanding and knowledge of different pedagogical approaches to music teaching (e.g. Kodaly, Orff, Musical Futures, Voices Foundation)
  • Experience of teaching a wide age range of learners
  • Experience of creating and arranging learning materials appropriate for use in lessons
  • Experience of promoting and delivering music in educational settings
  • Some experience and interest in teaching in schools
