We are seeking a reliable, proactive and hardworking School Caretaker to join a welcoming and vibrant school in Leeds. This is a highly rewarding role where you will play a vital part in creating a safe, secure and positive environment for pupils, staff and visitors every day.

Whether you are an experienced School Caretaker, Site Supervisor, Facilities Assistant, Maintenance Operative, Premises Officer, Building Caretaker or Estates Assistant, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

As School Caretaker, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the school premises, ensuring the building, grounds and facilities remain safe, secure, clean and fully operational.

No two days are the same. From carrying out minor repairs and planned maintenance to opening and closing the school site, you will be a key member of the school team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Opening and securing the school premises
  • Carrying out general maintenance and repairs
  • Basic plumbing, painting, decorating and DIY tasks
  • Conducting health and safety checks
  • Fire alarm and emergency lighting testing
  • Managing school security and access control
  • Monitoring contractors on site
  • Setting up rooms, halls and classrooms for events
  • Maintaining school grounds and outdoor areas
  • Gritting pathways during adverse weather conditions
  • Managing deliveries and stock control
  • Supporting compliance with safeguarding and health & safety regulations
  • Ensuring the school remains clean, safe and welcoming


What We're Looking For

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience in a caretaker, maintenance, facilities or site management role
  • Good practical DIY and maintenance skills
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Reliable, trustworthy and professional approach
  • Flexible and adaptable attitude

Desirable

  • Experience working in a school, academy, college or educational setting
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations
  • Facilities Management experience
  • First Aid qualification
  • Health & Safety qualification
  • Enhanced DBS Certificate (or willingness to obtain one)
