Engineering Manager | CRE - #2158209
Vannin Solutions Limited
West Yorkshire | Permanent | April 2027 start
This is a senior engineering appointment for an experienced Chartered Civil Engineer who is ready to take responsibility for an established engineering team and play a key role in the technical delivery of a growing infrastructure business.
The role is scheduled to commence in April 2027.
You’ll be responsible for making sure the engineering function works effectively across the business - from technical standards and design management through to engineering assurance, competence and the development of the team.
It’s a role with plenty of responsibility, but it isn’t purely about sitting behind a desk managing people. You’ll still be close enough to the engineering to make decisions, provide technical direction and get involved where your experience is needed.
What you'll be doing as Engineering Manager/CEM:- Leading the engineering team and providing day-to-day technical direction
- Managing the performance, development and competence of engineers across the business
- Taking responsibility for the engineering standards and processes used across projects
- Providing technical support to operational and project teams
- Overseeing the management and coordination of design activities
- Ensuring engineering requirements are understood and properly managed from project start through to delivery
- Providing engineering assurance and making sure the necessary checks, reviews and approvals are in place
- Supporting the appointment and management of CREs and CEMs across relevant projects and frameworks
- Undertaking CEM duties where required
- Providing senior technical input into rail projects and framework work
- Taking responsibility for temporary works arrangements and ensuring the appropriate engineering roles are appointed
- Working with clients, designers, project teams and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues
- Identifying weaknesses or inefficiencies within the engineering function and putting practical improvements in place
- Supporting the wider business with technical advice, engineering strategy and future planning
- You’ll need to be an experienced civil engineer with Chartered status and a background in infrastructure, ideally including significant rail experience.
- You’re likely to have already operated in a senior engineering, technical management or engineering leadership position and will be comfortable being accountable for both people and technical decisions.
- You should have a good understanding of the requirements around CEM and CRE appointments, engineering assurance and design management within the rail environment.
- Experience of temporary works is also important.
- We’re particularly interested in people who have managed engineering teams before and genuinely enjoy developing engineers, rather than simply allocating work and checking progress.
- You’ll need to be confident dealing with people at all levels — from engineers and project teams through to clients and senior management — and able to make sound decisions when things aren't straightforward.
This is an opportunity to join an established business in a position where your experience will have a direct influence on the engineering function.
The package includes:
- 25 days holiday + bank holidays
- Hybrid, flexible working (up to 2 days hybrid per week after probation)
- Pension scheme
- Professional membership subscriptions
- Life insurance
- Sick pay
- Paid volunteer days
- Ongoing training and development
- Clear progression opportunities
- Modern office environment and collaborative team culture
