Location: Leeds, LS11
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary Range: £40,000 - £45,000 per annum

Role Purpose

The Calibration Engineer will be permanently assigned to a key customer site and will be responsible for calibrating, verifying and supporting the performance of medical simulators located at the facility.

The role will ensure that all assigned equipment remains accurate, reliable, safe and compliant with applicable ISO standards, customer requirements, applicable procedures and quality-management processes.

The successful candidate will work closely with the customer’s laboratory, engineering and quality teams.

This is a practical, customer-facing position requiring strong technical ability, attention to detail and professionalism needed to represent our business within an important customer’s facility.

Key Responsibilities

Calibration and Performance Verification

  • Carry out planned and scheduled calibration of medical simulators and associated measurement systems.
  • Calibrate and verify parameters such as load, torque, displacement, position, temperature, flow and speed, depending on the equipment and application.
  • Ensure calibration activities are undertaken using suitable, traceable reference equipment.
  • Complete calibration work in accordance with applicable ISO, ASTM and other relevant testing standards.
  • Interpret calibration results and determine whether equipment meets the required tolerances and performance criteria.
  • Make appropriate mechanical, electrical or software adjustments where equipment falls outside the required specification.
  • Complete post-calibration checks to confirm the correct and reliable operation of the equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and fully traceable calibration records and certificates.
  • Monitor calibration schedules and ensure equipment is calibrated within the required timescales.
  • Identify equipment that is outside specification and follow the appropriate non-conformance and escalation process.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A recognised qualification in mechanical, electrical, electronic, mechatronic or instrumentation engineering, ideally at apprenticeship, HNC/HND or degree level.
  • Practical experience in equipment calibration, servicing, maintenance, commissioning or testing.
  • Experience using measurement and calibration equipment.
  • A good understanding of measurement accuracy, tolerances, repeatability and traceability.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings, electrical schematics and engineering documentation.
  • Experience producing accurate calibration records, technical reports or service documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for managing a planned workload.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and electronic record-management systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience within the medical-device, laboratory-testing, research, pharmaceutical, automotive, aerospace or similarly regulated engineering sectors.
  • Experience calibrating load cells, torque transducers, displacement sensors, temperature devices, flow systems or motion-control equipment.
  • Familiarity with orthopaedic implant testing or medical simulation equipment.
  • Understanding of applicable ISO and ASTM medical-device testing standards.
  • Experience with PLCs, control systems, data-acquisition systems and industrial software.
  • Awareness of ISO 9001 quality-management principles.
  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 calibration and laboratory competence requirements.
  • Previous experience supporting equipment used in a controlled laboratory environment.

Skills and Personal Attributes

The successful candidate will be:

  • Methodical, accurate and highly attentive to detail.
  • Comfortable working with complex mechanical, electrical and software-controlled equipment.
  • Able to analyse calibration data and make sound technical decisions.
  • A practical problem-solver who remains calm when dealing with faults or unexpected results.
  • Able to work independently while recognising when additional support is required.
  • Well organised and capable of managing calibration schedules and competing priorities.
  • Professional and confident when dealing with customer personnel at all levels.
  • Discreet and able to respect customer confidentiality and information-security requirements.
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to changing testing schedules and operational priorities.
  • Committed to completing work safely, accurately and to the required standard.
