Finance Manager - Financial Accountant – Financial Control

We are seeking a fully qualified Financial Accountant with strong technical accounting and financial control experience to join an established finance team. This is a hands on role for someone who understands the detail behind the numbers, takes ownership of the ledgers and has proven experience leading and managing a small-ish team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in core financial accounting, balance sheet integrity and financial controls, with experience overseeing the day to day accounting processes that keep a finance function running effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage a small finance team, overseeing day-to-day activities and ensuring accurate, timely delivery of financial accounting processes.
• Take ownership of the general ledger, ensuring the accuracy, completeness and integrity of financial records.
• Lead month end close activities ensuring journals, reconciliations and financial reporting are completed within strict deadlines.
• Prepare and review journal postings, balance sheet reconciliations and control account reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and resolving outstanding issues.
• Maintain strong financial controls and balance sheet integrity, ensuring accounts are properly supported and reconciled.
• Oversee key accounting areas, including fixed assets, accruals, prepayments, staff costs, property costs, IT costs, foreign exchange and VAT analysis.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR) and Payroll processes, ensuring these areas are accurately reflected in the financial accounts.
• Support statutory reporting, external audits, tax requirements and regulatory submissions, including VAT, PSA and ONS returns.
• Ensure accounting procedures are robust, consistent and compliant, identifying opportunities to improve processes and strengthen controls.
• Work closely with the Head of Reporting and relevant internal stakeholders to resolve accounting queries, manage priorities and support ad hoc finance projects.

What We’re Looking For:

• Fully qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA or CIMA.
• Proven experience in a Financial Accounting, Financial Control or similar technical accounting role.
• Demonstrable experience leading and managing a small team.
• Strong technical knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal postings, control accounts and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Experience overseeing or working closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll.
• A track record of maintaining robust financial controls and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
• Experience managing month end processes and delivering accurate financial information to tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
• A proactive approach to improving accounting processes, procedures and team performance.
