Team Leader - Waste Operations

Location: Leeds City Council, Newmarket House, Newmarket Approach, Leeds, LS9 0RJ

Pay Rate: £19.32 per hour PAYE

Contract: Temporary 2 - 3 Months full time

Leeds City Council is seeking two proactive and motivated Team Leaders to join its Waste Operations Service.

With around half a million household bins collected every week across the city, this is a key supervisory role that acts as the link between frontline collection crews and the operational management team. You will help ensure waste collection services are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards while maintaining a strong focus on customer service and operational performance.

Day-to-day of the role:

As a Team Leader, you will:

• Provide day-to-day supervision of waste collection operations within your designated area and across the city when required.
• Monitor service delivery to ensure tasks are completed safely, on schedule, and to agreed performance standards.
• Coordinate collection crews and resources, responding effectively to service, route, and staffing issues.
• Communicate operational updates to management and contribute to service improvement planning.
• Ensure services are appropriately staffed and fleet resources are available to maintain operational performance.
• Liaise with Fleet Services to coordinate vehicles and ensure they are safe, clean, and fit for purpose.
• Investigate, manage, and resolve customer complaints in line with Council procedures.
• Promote and maintain high standards of health and safety across all operations.
• Investigate and report accidents, incidents, and near misses.
• Support a positive health and safety culture through effective communication and teamwork.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Experience supervising or managing teams within an operational environment.
• The confidence and ability to handle challenging conversations professionally and effectively.
• Knowledge of waste collection, recycling, environmental services, or similar operational services.
• A strong customer-focused approach.
• Good IT and systems skills, including the ability to use operational management systems.
• Excellent organisation, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
• Experience working collaboratively within a team environment.
• A commitment to health and safety best practice.
