The Project Director is fully accountable for the project health and safety, technical, commercial, security and financial performance of the project and for its successful delivery in accordance with the Business Management System (BMS). They are accountable for all aspects of the project, including services delivered by other Cost Centres or Disciplines, by other WSP Group companies, or by Sub-consultants. The Project Director must identify and oversee the work of a suitably competent Project Manager and will set out a framework for delegating certain responsibilities in line with their contributions to the project.

  • Takes primary responsibility for client care and management.
  • Makes sure we have a clear understanding of what the Client wants.
  • Ensures that appropriate attention is given to the Client relationship.
  • Seeks informal and, when appropriate, formal Client feedback.
  • Appoints a suitably competent project team.
  • Appoints a Project Manager with skills, knowledge and experience appropriate to the requirements and level of risk associated with the project.
  • Provides oversight to the capability, behaviours, security performance and well-being of the project team.
  • Ensures active management resources remote from the core project team including Sub-Contractors.
  • Ensures that the work, budgeted costs and pricing associated with the project are defined, planned and understood.
  • Engages in an effective handover where the bid team is different from the delivery team.
  • Confirms that governance has been met and all necessary approvals have been granted.
  • Confirms that appropriate contractual documentation is in place and signed prior to commencement both in relation to Client facing and supply chain needs.
  • Ensures health, safety and wellbeing risks are identified and plans are in place to manage and control.
  • Ensures environmental risks are identified and plans are in place to manage and control.
  • Confirms a sufficiently defined plan is in place to guide the delivery of the project and has been shared with the project team.

  • Ensures effective security management throughout the Project Life Cycle and security controls are agreed upon, implemented, and assured throughout delivery.
  • Ensures appropriate controls are in place to monitor delivery against the plan.
  • Chairs regular, robust and holistic project reviews on the progress and performance of the project.
  • Regularly reviews risk, both positive (opportunities) and negative (threats) on the project.
  • Regularly checks for any changes on the project.
  • Drives consideration of opportunities to deliver efficiencies and margin improvement.
  • Monitors the issue and payment of invoices.
  • Oversees formal closure of the project.
  • Confirms deliverables have been issued and accepted by the Client.
  • Checks the Client is satisfied with the service they have received.
  • Agrees the plan for sharing any significant lessons that have been captured.
  • Confirms the project has been formally closed.

Essential

  • Relevant successful experience in project management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Detailed knowledge of Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations 2015
  • General knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations
  • Team leader capable of motivating the team
  • Commercial and financial understanding and knowledge

Successful applications will be required to be security cleared prior to appointment

Desirable

  • Membership of the Association for Project Management or other professional body
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt
  • A degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge of investment processes and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of project and contract management
