Java Developer

Rate: £350/day Inside IR35

Active SC preferred, or high confidence of eligibility

In office 3 days a week (locations Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Blackpool and Birmingham)

We're recruiting a Java Developer to join a delivery team on a long-running public-sector programme. You'll build and maintain services within a modern, event-driven stack, contributing across the full development lifecycle from design through to testing and deployment.

• Design, develop and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot
• Build and integrate event-driven components using Kafka
• Work with MongoDB for data persistence, alongside relational and other AWS-based stores
• Containerise applications using Docker, with a working understanding of images and containers
• Write unit tests and follow test-driven development practices
• Author BDD tests in Gherkin style, using Cucumber
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI or GitHub Actions)
• Deploy and operate services on AWS, using services such as SQS, S3, SNS and KMS
• Deploy to Kubernetes or ECS-based environments
• Perform load testing using Gatling or K6
• Participate fully in Scrum or Kanban ceremonies

Essential requirements

• Commercial experience with Java
• Commercial experience with Spring Boot
• Hands-on experience with Kafka and MongoDB
• Basic understanding of Docker images and containers
• Strong unit testing / TDD practice
• Gherkin-style BDD testing, ideally with Cucumber
• Experience with at least one CI/CD tool — Jenkins, GitLab CI or GitHub Actions
• Active Security Clearance, or a strong likelihood of being eligible for it

Desirable requirements

• Working experience with AWS services — SQS, S3, SNS and/or KMS
• GitLab CI/CD
• Hands-on Cucumber experience
• Load testing with Gatling or K6
• Familiarity with Scrum / Kanban
• Kubernetes or ECS
