Treatment Planning Clinical Technologist/Dosimetrist (XR07)

Applications are invited for a 12-month (secondment cover) Band 7 - Treatment Planning Clinical Technologist position at St James's University Hospital, Leeds. We seek an enthusiastic Radiographer/Clinical Technologist with radiotherapy experience to participate in providing a specialist service to all patients.


This role is based in Treatment Planning and the Mould Room. Main responsibilities include contributing to the daily operations of the treatment planning section, primarily computer planning for radiotherapy patients, including both routine and complex treatments; participating in routine dosimetry and quality control on treatment machines and simulators; and assisting with work in the Mould Room and Brachytherapy sections as needed.


Leeds produces over 5000 radiotherapy plans annually, mainly using VMAT and FFF technologies. Our service emphasizes research and innovation, with opportunities for project involvement and participation in clinical trials. We are a national leader in extracranial SABR.


Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include contributing to treatment planning, dosimetry, quality control, and supporting the clinical team with complex treatment requests. The role involves interpreting treatment requests, generating and reviewing treatment plans, and ensuring compliance with international standards like ICRU.

Job responsibilities

Managerial: Prioritize and manage own workload, maintain accurate records, monitor supplies, represent the department in meetings, and manage staff rotas.


Clinical and Scientific: Act as Practitioner, Referrer, and Operator under IRMER, operate treatment equipment, interpret complex treatment requests, and develop new techniques under supervision.


Treatment Planning: Interpret complex clinical requests, perform CT planning, contour organs at risk, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, re-plan treatments as needed, and advise on treatment techniques.


Dosimetry Services: Participate in quality assurance and calibration routines for equipment and treatments.


Teaching and Training: Contribute to staff training and development, supervise new staff and students.


Research and Development: Engage in service improvement projects and clinical trials.


Professional: Stay updated with technological advances, attend seminars, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Other Criteria

  • Ability to concentrate under unpredictable working patterns and interruptions.

  • Effective communication of complex information and training skills.


Qualifications

  • Degree in Clinical Technology or equivalent, with significant post-qualification radiotherapy planning experience.

  • Registration as a Clinical Technologist or Therapy Radiographer, or a clear pathway to registration.

  • Additional experience with simulators and membership of the Institute of Medical Physics & Engineering.


Experience

  • Knowledge of external beam radiotherapy principles, anatomy, and CT/MRI anatomy for treatment planning.

  • Experience with Monaco and RayStation planning systems, and radiotherapy technology including linear accelerators and simulators.
