CONTRACT TYPE: Fixed-term Contract/ attachment until 27/07/2026, Part-time (14 hours per week)
DEPARTMENT: BBC Local
LOCATION: Leeds – Office based.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,300 - £32,500 pro rata depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
You’ll be responsible for writing, compiling and presenting news bulletins as part of our weekend schedule on BBC Radio Leeds.
We’re proud of our bulletins – written and presented with flair, and featuring powerful local voices, they are the “shop window” for our journalism.
We’re looking for a talented on-air performer who knows how to spot and sell great stories, and can work to tight deadlines to get them on air.

As well as producing news bulletins for Radio Leeds, we also create content for the BBC News website and Look North.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
As part of your application, you will be asked to submit a short demo. We would like to hear an example of your newsreading. Please submit a link to an audio demo (maximum duration of 3 minutes) of your work presenting radio bulletins.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
- Producing and presenting hourly news bulletins for BBC Radio Leeds
- Using editorial judgement to develop story ideas and produce bulletins which are fair, accurate, balanced and impartial
- Writing short local news articles for the BBC News website
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards
- Working with colleagues to ensure our journalism works across digital, TV, and audio platforms including radio programmes and BBC Sounds.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- A great on air voice
- Significant experience in a broadcast newsroom, including experience of producing and reading radio news bulletins
- Exceptional writing skills
- A strong understanding of media law
- An understanding of what makes a great radio bulletin, and the stories people in West Yorkshire are interested in
- Strong audio editing skills
- Experience of making editorial decision on your own.
- An understanding of BBC production systems – including OpenMedia and Dira
- Experience of writing news stories for online platforms.
